FROM PUTTAPARTHI..."Divine Will is the Cause of all Causes".

When the cause is known, one can know all its consequences. The entire universe was formed from the five primordial elements (prapancha), and is a projection by the Divine Will.

It is a consequence of the Will of God (Bhagavath-Sankalpa). God is the cause of all creation. Correct vision will reveal to us unity in diversity; one's limited intelligence cannot unravel it.

With distorted vision (ku-darshan), one sees only the name and form, the appearances, and therefore gets deluded and confounded. One gets tossed by likes and dislikes, pleasure and pain, elation and depression. One is aware only of the unreal which appears in diverse names and forms.

Correct vision (Su-darshan) makes you see the One in the many. It reveals unity in diversity and confers supreme delight.

  - Sutra Vahini, Chap 7, "Divine Will is the Cause of all Causes".

PS: Our month-long Video and Radio festival celebrating the 85th Year of the Divine Advent of our Beloved Bhagawan Baba begins tomorrow!

The homepage of our website radiosai.org too will have a new look. It is here that you can watch all these 30 episodes of the video serial "Message of the Lord".

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...WHAT ARE DESIRES ???...

Taken from Shri.Anil Kumar's talks :

"Swami, all right, I want to see You. I want to talk to You. These are spiritual feelings. Are these spiritual feelings also desires? You said, `Don't have desires.' I want an interview. I want to have Your darshan. Is that also a desire?"

Let it be very clear. Bhagavan said, "No. (Laughter) All those feelings that are spiritual are not desires."

"Why, Swami? Because You are involved, right?" (Laughter)

He said, "No, no, no! Actually, what is a desire? A desire is something you have developed to procure a thing or an object that you don't have, right? You don't have a car, so you desire to have a car. You don't have a building, so you desire to have a building, right? So, a desire is something that is developed to possess or acquire what you do not have. Is that clear?"

"But, in spirituality, there is no procurement or acquisition of anything that you do not already have. It is only experiencing what you already are and what you already have – Love. Love is not a desire. You are the embodiment of Love. And peace -- peace is not a desire. You are the embodiment of peace. Or Truth -- Truth is not a desire. You are the embodiment of Truth. And God -- God is not a desire. You are God. So, how can that be a desire?"

Then I thought it wasn't a good time to continue with this topic.

Suddenly Swami looked at me and asked, "Do you have any desires now?"

What should I say?

I said, "Swami, I have no desires."

I thought He might give me a compliment. He didn't! (Laughter)

"You had a sumptuous lunch with so many sweets and spicy items, so
now you have no desires. (Laughter) You had a sumptuous, delicious
meal - well, I can understand." That's what He said.

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...THE TAILOR'S NEEDLE !!!

The Tailor's Needle

A tailor was at work. He took a piece of cloth and with a pair of shining, costly, scissors; he cut the cloth into various bits.

Then he put the pair of scissors at his feet. Then he took a small needle and thread and started to sew the bits of cloth, into a fine shirt. When the spell of sewing was over, he stuck the needle on to his turban.

The tailor's son who was watching it asked him: "Father, the scissors are costly and look so beautiful. But you throw them down at your feet. This needle is worth almost nothing; you can get a dozen for an Anna. Yet, you place it carefully on your head itself. Is there any reason for this illogical behaviour?"

"Yes, my son. The scissors have their function, no doubt; but they only cut the cloth into bits. The needle, on the contrary, unites the bits and enhances the value of the cloth. Therefore, the needle to me is more precious and valuable. The value of a thing depends on its utility, son, not on its cost-price or appearance."

Similarly, there are two classes of people in the world-those who create dissensions and disharmony, who separate man from man; and those who bring about peace and harmony, who unite people.

The former are generally powerful politicians, kings and unethical business men; and the latter are usually the poor devotees of God, the penniless wandering monks, and mendicants. It is true that the Lord make use of both to carry on his function of providing the field for the evolution of individual souls, but He throws down on the dust the former, who create wars and disharmony; and keeps the poor, pious devotee over His own head….!

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...THE LADIES...!!!

Respect Ladies!!

Sai Ram.

Today, I shall share with you an incident in the interview Room. An interesting episode indeed!!

As were sitting on floor, massaging Swami's legs, my wife told Swami, that she had a question to ask.  This impertinence from my wife in the Divine Presence flared me up. I shouted at her, reprimanding her for asking Swami such a question.

Now it was Swami's turn to get angry with me. His words, "She is only asking me. Why are you raising your voice, that too in my presence?  I will deal with her and respond to her. You just keep quiet."

Swami was speaking with us in Tamil. There were devotees from Croatia, Australia, and Thailand. Then suddenly Swami switched over  to English, and  sent out a clear message for all of us assembled in the Interview room.

"Listen. Never raise your voice against women, and use harsh words, hurting their mind. Note, that in any home, where there is no respect to women, there would not be Peace & prosperity. You may gain lot of wealth, but there will not be any peace in such homes. You may have compromised peace, but the home will be afflicted with poverty. For both such instance, the men are to be squarely blamed".

"Those who worship SAI should maintain silence in their homes as much as possible. Silence is "SAILENCE". This silence builds up positive energy in the house, which we call Divine Vibrations."

In the lighter wane, Swami joked, "If at all if you wish to quarrel on any issues, please go out of the home to a secluded place like a garden, to fight it out. By the time you would have moved, your temper would have calmed down, and you will be in position to express "sorry" to each other. You may be in a position to go back to home in a happier note."

Swami is teaching us in his unique method…….

With Love & Regards,

"Mumbai" Srinivasan

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - FAQ - 1 !!!

FAQ - 1

There are questions which everyone must have asked themselves and to others at some point in their lives. A long time back in the early 1980's Swami gave an interview to the Post Graduate Students who were passing out and Swami answered some questions in a most wonderful Manner, These wonderful words are from the Diary of a Student who was present there:

Q) Why do people suffer? Why does not Swami do anything for them? Why Does God make people Suffer?

"Do you think that Swami does not know that everyone is suffering, everyone who suffers does so because of His actions only, everyone suffers in this Life because of His actions, God never makes anyone suffer, Swami never wants anyone to be unhappy, Swami is always happy?

People Suffer only because of their past actions, that is why Swami says always do good things, Help others, Treat elders with respect and never cause harm to others. When you do these things you are always happy. Tomorrow you go and help another person and after you have done that you will get happiness for the Deed done. Always think Good about others, never think ill will of others. Bad actions and Deeds will come back to you at some time in your lives.

Never ever say that you are suffering because God wants you to, you suffer only because of your actions. Be good to everyone, Help others and Treat everyone as your own and see then how happy you are in life.

"All of you always hear Swami say that "I am happy", Swami is always happy, that does not mean that Swami is never sad, Swami is sad only because when I see people who come to me and then after hearing to what I say and after Having Darshan, do not put my Words into Practise. Swami feels most Sad then, if you want to see Swami happy and if you want to be happy with yourselves be good to others, See Good in others and Help Others. Good things always come back to you 1000 Fold. Reap the Fruit of your Good actions.

Every Single person in this world has to make his exit one day or the other. That particular moment should never be a moment of pain, Suffering and anguish; one should leave this world with a smile and a bow. If you want to do that a lot of preparation is necessary. To depart, leaving all that has been accumulated during a long lifetime is a hard task; so prepare for it by discarding attachment to one thing after another from now on.

Om Sai Ram

PS: You are blessed: God does not come near you or go away from you.  Near or far, the journey is yours.  Just look!  The distance from you to me is the same as the distance from me to you.  Saying "Swami! I am always close to you, but you are far away" is meaningless.  Due to defects in your thoughts you imagine that I am far away from you but I am always with and I will always be with you.

I am behind every devotee and spiritual aspirant.  He turns back to look at Me, I immediately go behind him.  That is why he cannot see me.  Sometimes, like lightening, I give darshan to him for a second.  All of you who belong to this age are blessed.  You are all getting the opportunity of seeing, touching, talking, listening to discourses and earning the grace of an Avatar. – SATHYA SAI BABA

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...EXCERPTS FROM PROF. ANIL KUMAR'S DAUGHTER'S TALK !!!

Excerpts from a talk given by Mrs Sarojini, (elder daughter of Prof Anil Kumar)

I'd like to share some experiences which are message-oriented. In 1988, Bhagavan selected my husband, and He also performed my wedding. During our wedding, He called all our family and gave us thoughtful messages. He waved His hand towards me and said, "This girl wants to go to United States. What is there is the U.S., Bangaru? Prashanthi Nilayam will become a mini-world, you will see." He moved His hand like this. "This is going to become a mini-world, you will see."

He looked at my husband and asked, "What do you want? Everything is in this Divine hand. Whatever you want, I can give it to you."

Shyam, my husband, said, "Bhagavan, I want to be near and dear to you."

Swami said, "What do you mean by 'near'?"

My husband said, "Being in the proximity of the Lord."

"What do you mean by 'dear'?"

"Always pleasing Bhagavan is being dear to Him."

Swami gave a beautiful example, an analogy, saying, "Shyam, in a pond there are lots of lotus flowers. Under the flowers there are frogs, but the honey-bees come from faraway places to absorb the Divine nectar from the lotus. The frogs are not able to realise the significance and importance of the flower, whereas the bees live far away, but they come. Similarly, you have to please the Lord at all times. That is important. There is no near and dear for Bhagavan."

Shyam said, "I want to be near and dear to Bhagavan."

Swami said, "Once you are dear to Him, you are near to Him. There is no distance."

We later realised that He was preparing us, because we were planning to come to the U.S. and He wanted us to be His messengers. Wherever you are, be dear to Him, and then you are near to Him. Distance is not a factor at all.

GOD IS NEAR IF WE ARE DEAR

Distance is not a problem for Bhagavan. Once we are dear to Him, once we please Him, once we offer everything wholeheartedly to Him, once we choose the life that has been given by Him and follow in His footsteps, we are dear to Him and thereby we are near to Him also.

In the same interview He said, "I have convinced your husband that he can do seva with four hands, once I perform the wedding." My husband was against the marriage. He was working as a seva dal in Chennai, and later on he moved to Brindavan. He was working in Bangalore city and his idea was to be close to Bhagavan.

Before we got married, every week he used to come to see Him. He said, "Swami, if you celebrate my wedding, if you do that, I will be away from You. I do not want to be away from You or Your work. You will stop talking to me once I get married. I do not want to be separated from You."

But Bhagavan said, "No, no, it is not going to happen." He assured him that once we were married, we could do service with four hands. And He explained the same thing to me: "If your husband wants to go for any service activity, encourage him, support him, and be there for him. Do not discourage him." Those were the words Bhagavan said. I thought that they could be shared, and that everybody could understand and connect with them.

For our first wedding anniversary in 1989, He asked us, "How are you managing in Bangalore city?" He said, "Sometimes people are artificial. They say something which they do not follow. You go to their homes, and they come to your homes. You know the same thing will be happening, and like this you develop bonds. That is not necessary. Develop that bond with God. He is your best friend. I know what kind of lifestyle people are leading in the city. I want you to focus on Me and Me alone."

He asked me if I was arguing with my husband. I answered, "No, Swami." But once when we came back to Bangalore after travelling, I started arguing with my husband. There is truth in each and every word of Swami. He knew I would argue with my husband for awhile. Anyway, we need to be very alert when He says certain things. There is depth and inner meaning in every look, word, and gesture. We should be alert, ready to grasp and absorb each and every act of His that is conveying a message for us.

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SWAMI'S WORDS !!!

PUTTAPARTHI :

When visiting the ashram to see Baba, He tells us that if we leave our ego's behind and come with open hearts, He can fill them with love He has come to give. So when visiting Puttaparthi we should PUT APART THE I.

PROPERTIES : Look at having Proper Ties with people.

PARENTS : are given that name, because it is through them that we have the wonderful chance of life on earth. For the sacrifices that they have made for us, we must PAY RENTS to them.

PEACE : People clamor "I want Peace", But they do not let go of I (ego) or Want(desire). I and Want deal with the outside world. Peace is inside, pieces are outside.

PATIENCE : Doctors need more patience, not patients.

INTERVIEW : Don't clamor for an interview. Instead search for the INNER VIEW.

DIAMOND : Why do you seek a diamond to give you joy? Seek instead the state of DIE MIND, which will give you pure and lasting joy.

SKILL : Knowledge must develop by balance into skill or else it degenerates into KILL.

HELLO : Do not greet anybody when the heart is filled with anger, distrust etc. Have, instead, a pure hollow from which a whole hearted Hello emanates.

TELEVISION : is TELE-VISHAM (POISON).

STUDY : to be STEADY.

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SWEETNESS FROM THE SANDS !!!

Sweetness from the Sands

It was in 1943, when Baba was seventeen years of age. One Full Moon night, about 9 P.M., five of us intent on `examining' Him, persuaded Baba to walk out with us to the sands of the Chitravathi River. He led us to a place where the dead are buried! We asked Baba, in Pun, "Well, Baba! Why have you brought us to the burial ground?" "Why? Are you dreading to go through it?" He questioned us. We said, "Yes, Baba. But, we are counting on Thy Grace, and our luck," and sat around Him.

Whenever we ask for anything, Baba used to answer, "O" "Right" "Why doubt about it?'' "We shall see," or some such similar word or words. So, one of us said, "Swami! Give us something to eat!" Baba laughed within Himself, and cast His glance on all of us in turn. I said, "Are you Sai Baba or not?" He replied quickly, "I am; what is it that you want? Hot Laddu? Boondi? Masaladosa? Poli? Do you want Suggi? Ask for whatever you desire to eat!"

Those were the days when mangoes could not be had anywhere. So, we planned to ask for mango. "We want here, from these sands, fine mango fruit," Baba sang two lines from an old song, "Yathna Prayathnamul, manavadharmamu jayapajayamul daivaadheenamu"

"To try and struggle is man's duty; to give or not to give man victory is God's will." He said, "Try; you will get them." So, one of us took a few steps forward on the sand, as if to pick up the fruit, and shouted from where he stood, "Are they here? Or there? Tell me where they are, and I shall dig the sand in that place, to take them."

Baba replied, from where He was sitting, "Dig anywhere." So, he bent low and sat on the sand and dug into it about three feet, in great earnest. He said at last, "Swami! I do not see any mango here!" Baba said, "Boy! You can get it there! Try, reciting the Name of God! Kashte phale" (Fulfilment only through tireless labour)!

So, my friend dug a depth of a few more inches, saying aloud, "Sai Ram," "Sai Ram". All of a sudden He was shocked into a strange terror when his fingers touched something soft and cold! For, it was the burial ground; it might well be a corpse! Seeing him, Baba (young Boy that He was) rolled on the sand laughing loudly at his plight. We too laughed with Him. "My dear fellow! It is not a dead body" said Baba, and asked me to go and help my friend. "It is a fruit, a fruit," He told us.

"Go and see," He ordered me and so, I went and peeped into the hole. O, the fragrance of ripe mango! Baba said, "He sees a corpse; you say it is fragrant! Whose word is true? Dig a little more, and bring me what you get!"

We made a wider hole and dug a little deeper; we called out Sai Ram, often. We got a nice Mulgoa mango, cold to the touch as if it had been taken out of a fridge just then. We took it to Baba and asked, "Swami! How can this one fruit suffice for five of us?" Swami had a knife in His hand (wherefrom it came, we could not guess). He started slicing the fruit and distributing the pieces to us, the taste was unimaginably sweet and lasting. Our stomachs soon became overfull. "Enough, Baba! Enough!" we cried.

Swami said, "There is half the fruit still with me. Who will eat this?" We prayed to be excused. "Impossible, Swami! We cannot eat any more," we swore. But, Baba did not yield. "Look here! The cremation ground, the burial place is here. I shall call ghosts to terrorise you. Eat, without protest," He commanded. As the mother feeds the child persuading it to swallow each morsel threatening it with `a tiger' or `thief', Baba fed us the entire fruit that day!

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SORROW & HAPPINESS !!!

Q: Does BABA suffer sorrow or happiness?

Swami: You see Sorrow and happiness only because of your dual nature. God only sees One, not many. Of course, the seed of activity (Karma) is there and that brings forth your destiny.

You reap whatever you have planted. God sees only one. There is a tree with its roots, trunk, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits. It is a manifestation of many forms and attributes, which have all come from the one seed. Take the example of soil or earth.

There is sweetness in sugarcane and various fruits. The sweetness is really contained in the one earth just as the tree is in the one seed.

Similarly for all the names, forms and attributes, the One Divinity is the basis. Because I know the Truth fully, that all are Divine; that everything is Divine and that there is no Jiva (individuality) other than Divinity, there is no time or occasion when Swami has suffered pain, or pleasure, or sorrow. At no time does Swami suffer any of these things.

When someone comes to me and says that he is suffering great pain or sorrow, I very much want to feel and see what pain is like or what sorrow is like. But it has not been possible for me to experience either pain or sorrow. Since such people have not understood this aspect of Mine, I pretend and look sorrowful or as if I am suffering. I pretend, so that I may correct them, put them on the proper path and make them understand me. I am telling you these things through truthful personal experience and these are not some imaginary statements.

In me there is no such thing as sinking at some worldly sorrows or being elated at some worldly achievements. "My Life Is My Message" has been said in this context and if you try to follow me, you will also have an enormous amount of peace and bliss.

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...BUDDHA...

Once Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers. This was in the initial days. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, "I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there."

The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid. The disciple thought, "How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink!"

So he came back and told Buddha, "The water in there is very muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink." After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake.

This time too he found that the lake was muddy. He returned and informed Buddha about the same. After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back. The disciple reached the lake to find the lake absolutely clean and clear with pure water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said," See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be.... and the mud settled down on its own - and you got clear water.

Your mind is also like that! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don't have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless.

OM SAI RAM

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...'LIGHT MEDITATION !!!"

Meditation on Light

(FROM CONVERSATIONS WITH SAI...)

Light a lamp or a candle. Gaze straight ahead at the flame. Then take the candle flame, the Jyothi, into your heart and see it in the midst of the petals of the heart. Watch the petals of the heart unfold and see the light illumine the heart. Bad feelings cannot remain. Then move the flame to the hands and they can no longer do dark deeds. In turn move the flame in like fashion to the eyes and ears so they may henceforth take in only bright and pure sensations. Then move the light outward and into your friends, relatives and enemies, and then into animals, birds and other objects so that all are illumined by the same light.

To sit straight is important. Between the 9th and 12th vertebrae is the life-force. If the spine is injured at this point, paralysis occurs. If the body is in a straight position, as if it were wound around a straight pole, the life force may rise up through the straight body and give the quality of intense concentration to the mind. Moreover, just as a lightning rod attached to the roof of a building attracts lightning, in like fashion, a perfectly straight body provides a conductor, so to speak, for divine power to enter the temple of your body and give you the strength to accomplish your task and reach your goal. As another example, the divine power is always here, just as radio signals are here. But to hear the radio music there must be an antenna. Further, if the tuning device is not properly adjusted, there will just be some sound but no music. In like fashion, the divine power, which is always present, may flow into you if the meditation is correct and the body straight.

Brahma Muhurta means early morning, between 3 - 6 a.m. It means that the senses are quiet, not yet agitated by the day and mind is quiet from sleep. But the hour should not be taken and changed around, taking one time today and another time tomorrow. A half hour in the morning and a half hour in the evening is enough for sitting meditation. If done all day along, it will lose its attraction after a couple of years. The spiritual practice should be varied for interest. Some bhajan, some repetition of the Name of the Lord, some time spent in the company of spiritual people and so on. Just as in daily life some variety makes the day interesting.

First you are in the light. Then the light is in you. Finally, you are the light and the light is everywhere. Enjoy for a while, then bring the light back to the heart and hold it there for all the day. The form of God may also be included. Krishna, Rama, Jesus, Sai, as you wish. The form of God selected may be seen in the centre of the flame wherever it is carried, and, then you are with God everywhere.

PS: Rendering service to others, without expecting service from them in return is the secret to ensure peace and prosperity for all. Karma or activity which binds is a huge, fast-growing tree. Undertake every act as an act of worship to glorify the Lord; it is like a powerful axe that can cut the root of the tree. This is the true Yagna, the most important ritual that one must practise. This sacrifice promotes and confers Brahma Vidya (Self Knowledge). The yearning to do Seva must flow in every nerve of the body, penetrate every bone and activate every cell.

A kitten simply continues mewing in its place, placing all its burdens on its mother.  The mother cat holds the kitten in its mouth and moves it to more elevated places or transports it safely through even very narrow passages. So too, the Lord will grant everything that is needed in this life, if all burdens are placed on Him and if He is pursued ceaselessly without forgetting Him for even a moment. All that is required is to place the entire burden on the Lord and surrender fully to His Will. He will certainly provide everything. Lakshmana, the dear brother of Rama, was an exemplar who followed this path of devotion called Marjalakishora. - SATHYA SAI BABA

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...BHAGAWAN IN BAHAI TEMPLE !!!

In the heart of New Delhi, the bustling capital of India, a lotus-shaped outline has etched itself on the consciousness of the city's inhabitants, capturing their imagination, fuelling their curiosity, and revolutionizing the concept of worship. This is the Bahá'í Mashriqu'l-Adhkar, better known as the "Lotus Temple". With the dawning of every new day, an ever-rising tide of visitors surges to its doorsteps to savour its beauty and bask in its serenely spiritual atmosphere.

On Monday, March 12, 2010, it had a unique visitor, who is verily the goal all worships offered in all places,  at all times in the name of God; The unique visitor was Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba!

As per the reports from Delhi, Bhagawan reached the Bahá'í Temple at around 11:30. He was welcomed by the Director of the Temple along with General Manager and other management officials. Unique feature of this Bahá'í Temple is that like any other Bahá'í Houses of Worship, the Lotus Temple is open to all barring any religious or other distinction, as emphasized in Bahá'í texts. Bahá'ís believe the crucial need facing humanity is to find a unifying vision of the nature and purpose of life and of the future of society. It is a gathering place where people of all religions may worship God without denominational restrictions.

The Bahá'í laws also stipulate that the holy scriptures of the Bahá'í Faith and other religions can be read or chanted inside in any language. Following these traditions, Sarvadharma Prayers were offered by men and women representing various religions, namely, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism and Islam in the immediate Divine Presence of Bhagawan on this blessed day.. This was followed a ten minute worship, a collective prayer to Almighty, by people from various faith. The function was attended by a capacity group of around 300 people and lasted for approximately an hour.

It was a day when God 'walked' into a monumental Temple, most silently, posing as a silent witness, while listening to multitudes of prayers from various faiths. One who preaches unity of all religions does accept prayers in unison and by His visit to this "Universal" Temple, Bhagawan shows His commitment to Universal Brotherhood through Unity of all Religions.

PS: Real people are those, who are filled with love. Their hearts are springs of mercy.  They are endowed with true speech and their minds are filled with peace.  Just as gold and silver are hidden deep under the earth, and pearl and coral deep under the sea, peace and joy also lie hidden in the mind. Desirous of acquiring these hidden treasures, if you dive inward and direct your mental activities towards acquiring these treasures, you become filled with love and peace.  You must fill yourself with this love and live in the light of unsullied, unselfish and pure love. FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SWAMI'S WORDS !!!

Look at the blossoms in the garden. When the gardener plucks the flowers, the buds exult that tomorrow is their turn to be gathered into his hands, and their faces are so full of joy when they unfold in that hope. Do they feel any sadness? Do their faces droop? Are they any less bright? No, the moment they know that the next day it is their turn; they make themselves ready with great gusto and excitement. So also, one must be ready on the path of Sadhana (Spiritual practice), enthusiastically remembering the Name of the Lord, without worrying and feeling sad about when we may have to depart from the earthly plane.

The Vedas lay down four goals before man: Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire) and Moksha (liberation). But they have to be pursued in pairs, Dharma and Artha together and Kama and Moksha combined. That is to say, Wealth has to be earned through Righteousness, and our Desire should be for Liberation. But man takes these four separately and ends up losing everything. He puts them into separate compartments and adopts distinct plans to achieve them. He gives up Righteousness and Liberation as beyond him and wastes his life pursuing only Wealth and Desire. This leads him to ruin.

For a hassle-free journey to eternity, there is nothing as reliable as remembering the Name of the Lord.  Once the sweetness of the Name has been experienced, you will not have any exhaustion, unrest or sloth. You will complete your pilgrimage joyfully, enthusiastically and with deep conviction.

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...DIGGING A WELL !!!

What is the use in planning a well when the house has caught fire? When will it be dug? When will water become available and when will the fire be extinguished? Isn't it an impossible task?

If at the very start, a well was dug, how helpful it would be during critical situations? Beginning to contemplate on God during one's last moments is like beginning to dig the well after the house has caught fire. No one knows what is in store the next moment.

Therefore, from now on, engage in contemplation of God and perform your spiritual practices. Physical stamina is very necessary for sadhana (spiritual practice), so look after your body with utmost care. But remember that over-tending is also harmful.

People tend to delay doing their duties. But for undertaking spiritual practices, there is no yesterday and no tomorrow. This very moment is the moment. If you have engraved this understanding in your heart, then you can merge in Lord Shiva.

If this truth is not assimilated, and you get immersed in aims of today and tomorrow, it lays the foundation for worldly attachment! Then you will be born again and again to have the darshan of Yama (God of Death)!

Those who realize this truth will not fail even to the slightest extent in their spiritual practices. It is the right of every aspirant to have the vision of Shiva (Lord of Auspiciousness).

SRI SATHYA SAI BABA

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE !!!

Phyllis Krystal experience with the divine avathar Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is special and is important reading for everyone who wants to go to India to meet with him. This book 'The Ultimate Experience' is a vivid account of her encounters with Sai Baba over a period of ten years. In this she explains her first experience meeting with this avathar.

==============================================================================

There were many several people in wheelchairs or lying on stretchers and many obviously sick children held in their mother's arms brought there as a last resort, in the hope that Baba would heal them. As I looked around at all those waiting people, I wondered what pain, sorrow, loss or deep yearning had been the impetus to bring them all to Baba.

After what seemed like hours but was probably less than an hour, an almost audible hush came over the crowd. By craning my neck I was just able to catch a fleeting flash of orange as baba approached the

Ornate gates. Then he emerged into full view giving me my first sight of him in person. I had many different reactions in far too quick succession for me to grasp them all at once. But of one thing i was certain; he was more vibrantly alive than anyone i had even seen in my whole life. I was, however, surprised to notice that he was even shorter than I had expected, both from his photographs and the films we had seen.

I saw that his thick neck and shoulders and head, with its shock of black hair standing our all around it like a dark halo, all gave the impression that he was a large man. Yet I observed that his body was slight and extremely graceful. He appeared to float rather than walk and slowly and drifted between the rows of densely packed men and women. Perhaps what most impressed me was the way his eyes darted here and there over the heads of the people, as if watching and listening to tune in to their needs and conditions.

I prayed silently for him to give me a sign to indicate if he was the Master I should now follow. He continued to move gracefully back and forth between the sides of the driveway. Then he moved past me and several feet beyond. As I watched, I thought to myself, "So that is my answer. He is not my guru." Heavy-hearted, I realized that I must continue to seek further.

No sooner had I accepted this decision than he wheeled around until he faced me directly, and said, "So you have come!"

With this observation his face broke into the most radiant smile I have ever seen, like the sun suddenly coming out from behind a cloud and lighting up everything it touched. I was so dazzled by it, that I seemed to lose all sense of time or place, and my mind went blank.

I have no idea how long it was before he turned and continued on his way between the lines, for time seemed to stand still.

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...1999...THE YEAR OF PRAMADI !!!

This episode described below is also a proof Baba's words of the utter catastrophe of events that could occur in case we do not follow his command. Baba on his return from Brindavan to Puttparthy on 12th December had announced to the students that the Sports Meet (which was held every year in January 11th) should not be held that year (1999). He announced the same at Brindavan too before coming to Puttaparthy.

Students did not listen and prayed very fervently for the Sports Meet, which they felt, was the only opportunity to do something for Baba and dedicate it to him.

Even though Baba had ordered the sports meet not to be held and a notification from the Vice-Chancellor's office to this effect had already been issued, students still persisted with their regular practices hoping that Baba would somehow still agree. Many days passed this way with students praying hard within the mind and also sending greetings and requests to Baba to take back his order of not holding the sports meet. Baba took none of them. Some greetings were sent back to hostel with Baba's message of not raising the issue again.

But students still persisted....Baba later agreed.

January 14th arrived and the students arrayed themselves to display before Baba all they had practiced for 45 days. Baba's caravan arrived with Baba seated on a seat with a steel covering. As Baba's caravan reached the ladies section, Baba's car halted for a while and Baba stood up to wave to the people assembled. As he stood waving to the crowd, Baba's car moved a little bit to the front. Baba lost his balance and fell back on the steel covered seat. Baba's hands, spinal cord and head rammed against the steel covering which sent shock waves amongst everyone. Baba sat on his seat in that position for a few moments.

A few moments later to everyone's relief Baba got up and started waving to everyone again. The car stopped and the Vice - Chancellor received Baba, who got down and accepted the floral tributes. Baba walked without any apparent problems on the ramp and occupied his seat. After the program, Baba left waving to everyone saying he was immensely happy.

Two days later, before the brothers of Brindavan left, Shri. Narasimhamoorthy was called in for an interview. During the interview, he noticed bandages on Baba's hand and cried out "Baba, What is this?"  Baba brushed aside his question but on being persistently being asked, Baba revealed the truth, which when announced by Shri. Narasimhamoorthy the next day stunned everyone.

The following are the excerpts of the speech delivered by Shri. Narasimhamoorthy, the Warden of Sri Sathya Sai Hostel, Brindavan who was crying continuously as he gave his speech:

As Baba was speaking to Mr. Indulal Shah, Mr. Srinivasan and others in the interview room, Mr. Indulal Shah noticed blood oozing out of Baba's sleeve. A shocked Indulal Shah got up to ask Baba about it, but was quieted by Baba who said "Don't tell anybody about this outside. The children will get scared."

Baba later told Mr. Indulal Shah, Mr. Srinivasan and Shri.  Narasimhamoorthy that the year 1999 was the year of Pramadi (an year of torments) .One of the boys performing a dangerous stunt was going to fall from a height that very day.

Baba knew this right from the start and to avoid this ordered the sports meet not be conducted, which as readers know was not adhered to. (Later Baba disclosed in the discourse following Shri. Narasimhamoorthy's speech that -- "You were not ready to listen to me. You all were praying so hard. Even after repeatedly telling you not to go ahead with the program, when you were so insistent, then I had no other alternative but to let you perform. But there was no way I could let my own children get hurt. So I transferred his Karmic effect on me. I can bear it but you cannot. If he would have fell from that height, his hands would have smashed on the ground, his spinal cord would have split and head smashed to pulp. When Baba fell on the steel casing, Baba's hands, spinal cord and head rammed against it. That was my way of taking up his injury").

Baba started bleeding profusely. His back was soaked in blood. His head too had been hit. But Baba let no one know of this. Baba's maya covered the visibility of blood from the scores of VIP's between whom Baba was sitting. For five hours Baba bore the ordeal. In spite of the piercing pain Baba came down to give group photographs and climbed the stairs again.

For 3 days Baba bore the injuries. Not one of us knew of this until Shri. Narasimhamoorthy was allowed to tell it in course of his speech. Shri. Narasimhamoorthy cried, the students cried and the devotees wailed.

Later when students apologised, Baba said "Are, Protecting you is my responsibility ra (ra is a word frequently used in telugu towards someone you love). You are my children. Can I ever let you high and dry?"

PS: An animal has several innate undesirable qualities; however hard it may try to eliminate them they cannot be transformed.  For example, we can bring up a tiger cub with affectionate care and train it to be gentle and obedient, but when it is hungry, will it relish poori (an Indian dish made of wheat flour) and potato curry? No, it will only relish raw meat! Hence, the scriptures quote: "Man indeed is the most fortunate and sacred amongst all beings, for one's inborn qualities can be sublimated".  Realizing this truth, each one must elevate their self through training and self-effort.SATHYA SAI BABA

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...AN INTERVIEW WITH SWAMI !!!

An Interview with Sai Baba by PF Sloan

It was on my second visit to see Sai Baba that I was granted a private conversation with Him. These are called interviews. Almost everyday Baba would choose a group of people to talk to in a small room. Baba chose all kinds of people from all walks of life and all different countries. You couldn't make an appointment to speak with Him. Presidents and movie stars. He did the choosing! Everyone wanted this interview, but I was very frightened by the thought of it.

Baba usually asked people, "What do you want?" and I really didn't know. I knew I didn't want to be forced into a situation where I would talk like a parrot out of fear and say "I want Enlightenment! Enlightenment over good health or wealth." I didn't know what I wanted. That night he came to me in a dream and said "I know you're frightened, don't be. I will show you right now everything that will take place in the interview. And I won't ask you any questions!" He told me two people were flying in from Los Angeles, Dave and Barbra Lambert. After they had been there for a few days, he would ask our group in for a talk!

True to the dream - that's what took place.

I held the door open to His little room and let everyone in the group go in first. It numbered around forty or so. I sat in the back of the small room, hiding myself. He sat on a chair and sang a song to us, 'Love is my Form, Truth is my name, Bliss is my food'. He called me to come sit in front of Him. Then He asked me if I would please massage His feet for Him. I began to gently massage His feet while He told stories and asked questions of certain people. I watched as He waved His hand and a gold pen appeared. He showed it to me and asked if I liked it. I said it looked like good workmanship. He agreed. He gave it to an Indian student that sat at His left, and smacked him on the face. He 'created' a packet of blue pills that he threw to one of the ladies in our group. He told me she didn't know it, but she was going to have terrible stomach pains later in the day, and we should give her these pills along with fresh mango. "After 3 days she will be alright", He told me. About ten minutes after the interview, Jenny collapsed.

He invited a small group of 6 people, not including myself, to go into another adjoining room. While the larger group waited, Baba pulled open a curtain and we sat down in a smaller room. He sat on an old chair, and this was where He usually asked people what they wanted. The group, 3 women and 3 men, sat quietly. I suddenly remembered this part in my dream that I had had with Baba. He was staring at me like an impatient schoolteacher waiting for me to say something!

I asked Baba, "May I ask you a question?" He said, "Yes, what is it?" It looked like relief flashed across the expression on His face. Like he was saying to me, "It's about time, Phil!"

"What do You see when You see me?", I asked.

Baba looked at all the people sitting there in a state of semi-frozenness and said, "I see only Light and Love". His reply seemed to warm everyone up and I went into another state of mind, and didn't hear anything else till we rejoined the larger group.

Baba gave me 18 packets of Vibuthi, and everyone else received handfuls of it. Everyone walked out the door but me. I stood there alone with Baba. I was just looking into His eyes and He into mine. When suddenly he said, "Yes, what is it?"

I didn't want any material thing from Baba at that moment, I realized. I just wanted to know He was for real! "Yes," He said to me. I smiled and showed him this small silver ring of Shirdi Sai Baba that had recently broken.

Not knowing how to ask him directly if He would fix it for me, I said instead, "Baba, look at this ring, what shall I do with it?" He looked at it and delivered a punch line I never expected. "If I were you I'd keep it", He said.

I nearly exploded in laughter, but contained myself as He walked me out the door, and I felt the warm sunlight disappear into a greater sunlight within me.

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SOCRATES' TRIPLE FILTER TEST !!!

The Socrates Triple Filter Test

In ancient Greece , Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem.
One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said,

"Do you know what I just heard about your friend?"

"Hold on a minute," Socrates replied..

"Before telling me anything, I'd like you to pass a little test.

It's calledthe Triple Filter Test."

"Triple filter?"

"That's right," Socrates continued.

"Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say.

That's why I call it the triple filter test."

"The first filter is TRUTH.

Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and..."

'All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not.

Now let's try the second filter, the filterof GOODNESS.

Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"

"No, on the contrary...."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true. You may still pass the test though, because there's one filter left:

the filter of USEFULNESS.

Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really."

"Well," concluded Socrates,

"if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful,

why tell it to me at all?"
