FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT - 23: TO REACH KAILASHA !!!

SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT – 23

TO REACH KAILASHA!!!

Millions come to Kashi as pilgrims. It is said that those who see Kashi will not be born again.

One day at Kailasha, Parvathi asked Shiva, "Lord, I have heard that all those who visit Kashi, where there is a celebrated shrine for your worship, will attain Kailasha and stay on there in your presence. Millions are coming to Kashi, but is this place big enough to accommodate all of them?"

Shiva replied, "Every one of them cannot come to Kailasha. I shall design a play and make clear to you who among the millions can come here. You, too, have a role to act. Do as I direct you to."

Parvathi became an old lady of 80 and Shiva a rickety old man of 90. The old woman had the old man on her lap, right at the main entrance of the famous Shiva shrine of Vishweshwara, and she lamented: "My husband is terribly thirsty. He is about to die of thirst. I cannot leave him and go to the river Ganga to bring him water. Will any of you pour a little GANGES water down his throat and save his life?"

The pilgrims were coming up from the ghats after their ceremonial bath in the holy river, their clothes still wet and clinging to their bodies. Some of them commented that their peace was disturbed by the sight of this pathetic couple. 'We have come to take Darshan of the Lord, and look what meets our eye.' There were some who flatly ignored her cries and lifted their noses in the air. Some said, 'Wait. Let us finish the worship inside the temple and then we shall bring the Ganga water for you.' No one offered them Ganga water since they needed it for themselves!

Just then a robber, who was hurrying into the temple to pick a few pockets, heard the plaintive voice of the old woman and halted near them.

She cried, "Son, we came to this place to have Darshan of Lord Vishweshwara of Kaashi, but my husband has fainted out of sheer exhaustion. He might survive if someone will bring a little Ganga water and pour it down his throat. I cannot leave him here and go for water. Please help me and earn the merit."

The robber was moved into compassion despite his 'profession'! He had a little Ganga water in the hollow gourd he had with him. He knelt down near the dying person on the lap of the old woman, but the woman stopped him suddenly saying, "The moment the Ganga water wets his throat, my husband may die; he is in the last stage of living. Therefore speak a word of truth and pour the water."

The robber could not understand what she meant, so she explained, "Speak within his hearing, some good deed that you have done in your life, and then pour the water in his mouth." That created a problem for the robber. He was at his wits end. He could not quite comply.

He said, "I have, in truth, not done any good deed so far. This present act, the offering of water to this thirsty man, is the very first good deed I am responsible for." And saying this, he placed the gourd at the lips of the old man and gave him a mouthful.

Just at the moment, the couple disappeared and in their placed stood Shiva and Parvathi, in all their splendour, blessing the robber who was completely stunned & speechless!

LORD SHIVA told him, "Life is to be dedicated for the service of others and not devoted to the exclusive interests of oneself. Howsoever many wicked deeds you might have done so far, for your selfless offering of Ganga water with truth on your tongue, we bless you with this Vision & grant you liberation! Remember there is no morality higher than truth; there is no prayer more fruitful than seva. No amount of rituals & worship would help if you don't do seva. Both are essential just like a bird requires 2 wings. With these 2 wings you can reach KAILASHA!!!"

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT - 22: DEATH OF EGO !!!

SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT – 22:

DEATH OF EGO!!!

It was the compound of a Primary School on their annual day. The whole campus was a festival of joy: children with their parents and relatives while the others were running about, playing games. There were kids enjoying the tumble of the see-saw, some others shrieking delightedly on a swing, a few others disgorging themselves from the mouth of a slide that resembled an elephant trunk – the entire scene looked like a fairyland.

There were a couple of teachers walking around, keeping a watch on the children. We were guests invited by the school authorities.

Suddenly an interesting scene was unfolding before our eyes. A boy, barely in the 2nd standard, was standing a few feet from me, rubbing his eyes, and sobbing. An older boy came up to him, and asked him why he was sobbing. One hand still rubbing his eyes, the little chap pointed out what was happening a little distance from him. A teacher was gently reprimanding a couple of children.

The older boy asked, "What? Why are you crying?"

"Teacher is scolding them," the little one replied.

"She is scolding them, not you. Why do you cry?"

"They are my friends, my class," the boy replied, whimpering.

The older boy did not know what to say.

Then the scene changed. The teacher lifted one of the boys whom she was reprimanding, a tiny, cute-looking chap, and carried him on her shoulder. Surely, she did not like to draw tears from his eyes. The boy who was crying until now suddenly leapt up jubilantly!

Bewildered at this unexpected change, the other boy and asked him, "Hey, what happened now? Why are you jumping in joy?"

"See, teacher loves my friend & she is carrying him." Then he jumped a few steps, and ran away.

The older boy was not only speechless, but stupefied too! We were watching the scene & we were clean bowled! What an absolute identification with another's tears and smiles! This was the first time that we saw anything like this though it must be happening practically every day in schools!

This little boy had so identified with his friend's tears and smiles that he forgot he was not being scolded or being loved, yet he experienced both. It was the death of ego! There was no trace of it in that little boy!!!

'Watch' and 'Be Happy'. In fact this is so simple that it must be Divine & this phrase must have been handed over by GOD only to the hapless human beings because humans have this uncanny talent to make things complex! (WORDS, ACTION, THOUGHTS, CHARACTER & HEART)

PS: Spiritual life is easy. There are some initial problems, as in learning anything. But it is easy. A bowl turned upside down remains dry no matter how heavy the rain. Whereas a bowl turned up collects some rain even though the rain is very light.

Just like that, if the heart is turned towards God, 'some grace' will be received. If the devotion and interest in spirituality is intense, grace will fill the bowl. It is life in the outer world that is endless trouble, whereas spiritual life is easy.

To be reborn again requires no work. Not to be reborn again requires much work. A lot of work!!!

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT - 21: THE UNIVERSE - PART ONE!!!

SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT – 21

THE UNIVERSE – PART ONE!!!

(Today's SQ attempts to be different & takes you to outer space. So visualize!)

·        EARTH is bigger than VENUS, MARS, MERCURY and PLUTO but becomes 'smaller' when compared with NEPTUNE, URANUS, SATURN and JUPITER.

·        EARTH Ultimately becomes a 'DOT' in front of the SUN!!!

·        The SUN on the other hand becomes so tiny in front of other STARS like POLLUX & ARCTURUS. POLLUX is the brightest star in the constellation Gemini and one of the brightest in the night time sky.

·        Look at ARCTURUS now, which is a red giant star. It is at least 110 times more luminous than the Sun!!!

·        For comparison, if ARCTURUS were at the center of our solar system its surface might extend out to between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, wholly engulfing Mercury, Venus and Earth!!! Just imagine!!!

·

·        But the same ARCTURUS gets 'dwarfed' in front of BETELGEUSE & ANTARES.

·

·        BETELGEUSE is located 427 light-years away from Earth & is the second brightest star in the constellation Orion and the ninth brightest star in the night sky. BETELGEUSE is one of the largest stars known.

·

·        Finally come to ANTARES which is a super giant star, with a diameter of approximately 700 times that of the Sun!!! ANTARES is approximately 600 light years from our solar system. Its visual luminosity is about 10,000 times that of the Sun! ANTARES is the 15th brightest star in the sky.

·

·        Now where would 'our own' SUN be in front of this giant ANTARES? Nothing but a tiniest of tiny dots!!!

·

·        Where does it leave the EARTH, our Planet? When the Astronomers compared these heavenly bodies in the same scale, EARTH could not be even seen!!! That's right! EARTH became invisible!!!

·

·        The so called 'highly intelligent' species called MAN lives on this invisible planet called EARTH, so arrogant and so proud of his 'perceived' intellect!

·

·        When the EARTH itself is invisible, where would that leave MAN???

·

·        Shouldn't we at least 'bow' before this SUPREME DIVINE POWER, be HUMBLE & be more COMPASSIONATE towards fellow human beings & all other creations?

·

·        For Man has been sent into the world for a special purpose: In order that he may use the time and opportunity to realize the truth that he is not man but God and so are all other creations!!! Everything is God. The Atmic Principle is one. All are one & hence we've to be alike to everyone!!!

·

1.      "I know this world is ruled by infinite intelligence. Everything that surrounds us- everything that exists - proves that there are infinite laws behind it. There can be no denying this fact. It is mathematical in its PRECISION. Thomas Alva Edison (1847 - 1931)

2.      Every one who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe -- a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel HUMBLE. Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

PS: However high a bird may soar, it sooner or later must perch on a tree-top to rest and enjoy some quietness. So too, a day will come when even the haughtiest, the most unbelieving and even those who assert that there is no 'GOD', will have to pray, "GOD, grant me peace, grant me consolation, grant me joy, save me from this misery and show me the truth!!!" …SATHYA SAI BABA

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT - 20: DEATH OF THE BODY !!!

SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT – 20

DEATH OF THE BODY!!!

A man worships his mother who gave him birth. He massages her feet, prostrates before her, gazes into her eyes with love, listens to her voice, is warmed and made happy by her affectionate and loving regard.

At age 75, the mother dies.

The son cries out, 'Mother, Mother, why have you left me & gone?'

Why did the man cry out? The body he worshipped was still there, the feet he massaged daily were there, but he cried out that his mother was not there, that she had left him!!!

It's quite obvious that even though the man had for the past several years regarded the body and mother as one and the same, yet when the mother died he instantly knew that 'mother' was not body and that 'mother' had departed even though body remained!!! Isn't this amazing? Even while knowing this TRUTH all the time, we very often refuse to accept it when we're faced with that tragedy!

So, of what value was the body, which was never the mother, even though for a time it had been regarded as mother?

Contemplating this mystery, it is apparent that had it not been for the body, the mother could not have been known at all. It was only through the medium of body that the man was able to experience and thus know the tender, loving, sublime quality of the mother which resulted in love rising up in his heart.

The formless, timeless quality of 'mother' could be known and attained only through the 'impermanent physical form.'

"Since God has no form, our minds need to visualize a form in order to focus our devotion and worship towards this one object or form and out of His infinite mercy and Grace, God manifested in various forms..."

GOD, who's timeless & formless, has to take birth as a human being only for us to understand this concept of AVATAR!!! Whether RAMA or KRISHNA or BABA, God has to come in 'some human form' for man to see & feel HIS presence!!!

It's said, "IT'S SO AMAZING TO HAVE AN AVATAR IN OUR MIDST BUT IT'S ALSO EQUALLY OR MORE AMAZING NOT TO RECOGNIZE ONE!!!"

It is also said that there are 2 things we always ought to remember: Death and God!

This means if we contemplate on God always knowing that Death would strike us some day, then much good action will result, and harmful action will be avoided.

On the battlefield, Krishna told Arjuna, "Arjuna, you are not the body but the eternal Atma. (God) Let your Atmic nature guide your actions rather than mere worldly considerations."

However, what happens almost always is that we forget to take orders from the Atma & very often we don't listen to our inner voice that can be heard in silence. In the Gita, Krishna very clearly reminds man, "You have a cosmic connection with every entity in Creation."

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT -19: THE IMMUNITY !!!

SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT – 19

THE IMMUNITY!!!

sairam,

I have one doubt. Apart from our karma can somebody's anger, hatred or jealousy give bad things to us?

For example, a person may feel jealous and do bad things & even some good people are feeling jealous or crying when others get something more than them!

Does it affect the people who are getting it, that is who are successful?

For children we say drishti…

Do children also get affected if somebody feel jealous etc

Regards

Bharti Rajesh

When the tender plant of devotion begins to grow, it must be protected.

When a young tree is growing various animals will eat it and may kill it. For this reason a fence is placed around the young tree to protect it. When the tree is grown it needs no protection. The same animals which would have first destroyed it now seek and find shade and shelter beneath the same tree's branches.

Don't we immunize children against a whole lot of diseases? The Pediatrician gives us an immunization schedule that we parents are supposed to follow. Very often we hear the Doctor saying that the child's immunity has to improve & so on. As we continue to implement the immunization schedule, over a period, the child's immunity towards various diseases gets enhanced.

Now, this is as far as the physical front is concerned. It is not just physical touch wherein lies the danger, but in mental intimacy also, bad influences (energy) may flow from one person to the other. Our children are not just our children, they are God's children. We should love them & take care of them & keep enhancing their immunity against all the pollution & trash that is heaped on them.

Slowly & steadily but surely, when devotion has grown strong and intense, it will burn all sins. Just like that, our immunity against people casting an 'evil eye' on us (Drishti) also increases!

It's like building armor around us, an armor that can't be pierced or penetrated!!! That means no evil thoughts or feelings of others can penetrate our armor to cause any damage whatsoever!

It is for this reason, there are several Temples or Maths or Religious bodies or even some schools that teaches the VEDAS, VISHNU SAHASRANAMA, RUDRAM, GAYATRI MANTRAM, MEDITATION, YOGA etc…to small children. They also inculcate in the children the habit of doing SEVA. It's that unshakeable faith that by chanting all these Mantras & Hymns & visiting important places of worship & doing service, no danger would ever befall us! (Applicable to all age groups) This is our armor!!!

Diplomats have diplomatic immunity that helps them go through the customs & many other places 'unchecked'. Spiritual aspirants have that divine immunity that helps them breeze through life itself, 'unchecked' by the misfortunes & tragedies!!!

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT - 18: GOD AS IDOL OR IDOL AS GOD !!!

SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT – 18

GOD AS IDOL OR IDOL AS GOD!!!

There was once a saadhaka (spiritual seeker) who approached a guru for guidance. The guru gave him an idol of VISHNU and also necessary instructions for daily worship. But the saadhaka found that, even after some months of meticulous puja, he did not get any spiritual reward or elation.

So, he reported his dissatisfaction and the guru gave him another idol, this time of SHIVA and asked him to have another try. The disciple came after another six months demanding another idol, because even Shiva had failed him. This time, he got a GANESHA idol, which he duly installed in his domestic shrine. The two previous idols were standing, dust-ridden and neglected, on the window-sill.

After a few months he was quite disgusted at the progress he made & went to the Guru again for the 4th time. This time the Guru gave him an idol of DURGA & the Saadhaka said if this also doesn't work, he wouldn't bother the Guru again!

One day, while performing
Durga-puja, the disciple found that the perfumed smoke from the incense-stick was being wafted by the breeze towards the dusty idol of SHIVA on the window-sill. He got wild that the ungrateful stonehearted SHIVA who was deaf to his powerful prayers earlier should get the perfume intended for his latest idol that was DURGA!!!

So, he took a piece of cloth and tied it round the face of SHIVA, closing up the nostrils that were inhaling the perfume & continued with his DURGA puja.

Suddenly, to his immense surprise LORD SHIVA appeared in all His splendor and Glory & stood before the saadhaka! The man was dumb-founded & stunned that in spite of the ill-treatment that he had given to SHIVA, the LORD gave him darshan.

So he asked SHIVA, "When I was doing DURGA puja, why are you giving me darshan & why didn't you come before me when I was worshipping you earlier?"

LORD SHIVA answered, "My dear devotee, for the first time you believed that the SHIVA idol was alive, conscious & full of life and it was that belief which forced you to tie the bandage around my nose! The moment you realized that the idol was full of consciousness you got the realization that you were struggling to get all along!!!"

SHIVA continued, "Therefore, you should see, not the stone which is the material stuff of the idol, but the Power that is inherent in it, that is symbolized by it, is the same DIVINE Power that is inherent in your own heart and that pervades and transcends all creation. It's the same power in the whole UNIVERSE!!!"

"This time you believed the stone image to be God while earlier you used to bring God down to the level of a stone image! You may worship a picture as God, but you should not worship God as a picture!!! That's essentially the difference! Wood, stone or mud may be assumed to be Divine, but Divinity should not be limited to wood, stone or mud" concluded SHIVA.

PS: This example should answer the following question to a large extent. GOD or the SUPREME CONSCIUSNESS is indeed FORMLESS but probably GOD knew that Man would find it very difficult to worship the 'FORMLESS' & in all HIS compassion HE ensured that there were multitudes of forms to cater to multitude section of the population! ALL FORMS ARE HIS! SINCERE PRAYERS TO ANY FORM REACHES HIM.

We have to realize that 'one' part of that FORMLESS is within us & that's precisely our COSMIC CONNECTION!!! Hence attributing, visualizing & worshipping various forms becomes quite essential in our long journey to reach the FORMLESS DIVINE!!!

Moreover we have to move from the form to the formless & there are no short cuts or double promotions!!! Trying to worship the formless without ever accepting & experiencing the beauty & the majestic splendor of various forms of God is like 'playing Tennis with a Golf stick!!!

SAIRAM
Moderator,

Q: I went through the entire quotient. In one of the paragraphs, it is mentioned that God is formless. In order to focus our devotion, forms are created. Does it mean, whether forms are depicted by men in order to focus our devotion on one object? I.e. whether forms such as Muruga, Ganesa, Rama, and Krishna are the forms created by men? If they are not so, how to realize them as gods?

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...THE LONG LEASH !!!

Sai ram, sometimes in your stories, God is only the Witness, when we do everything wrong and He is the Doer, when we think we did something right?? Could you clear this up for me, I'm not trying to be smart, just confused and I'm sure you have answers for all of us who have questions; Still have a lot to learn and enjoying it. Thank you for all of us. Om Sai Ram

Sai ram, I was convinced that you would have an answer and you did!! Thank you thank you thank you, Om sai ram

francoise lamontagne

THE LONG LEASH!!!

"In a vast slush green field, a cow is tied to a peg, with a rope of about 100 meter long. The fate of the cow is now fixed. However it can choose to graze in a circular area of 100-meter diameter. Within this big circular piece of land, it can graze, take rest & be happy.

By a foolish act, if the cow chooses to go round, round very often, the length of the rope gets reduced, and it cannot even enjoy the allotted area of grazing!!!

On the contrary, if the cow uses its own strength to stretch as much as possible from the very peg to which it is tied down, it can reach out to a much larger area without any limitation. In rare cases if it uses its' brute strength, it can even uproot the peg but that's an exception!

Thus many options are available for the cow. The cow's specific choice of the option and the effects of such option becomes its' fate. By using its intelligence and making efforts, it can overcome the so called fate, or the limitations enforced upon it."

Similarly in life we should neither get entangled nor entangle others!!!

Another analogy is that of a Man holding his pet Dog at the end of a leash. The Man is holding the leash tightly & within that diameter the dog stretches & does everything. By holding the leash tightly, the man is not only protecting his dog but also other smaller animals & of course the human beings! At times, he lets the dog loose especially in the night for his protection!

Just like that, imagine that we're all tied to a very long leash that is held by GOD. HE lets us do whatever we want, lets us decide from various options as long as it's within that huge circle! If things are not going according to HIS plan, in case we stray from the path, he simply gives a tug at the rope. It's like a reminder for us not to forget HIM! All along HE has the control.

When you see a plane flying in the sky, would you refuse to believe that it is flown by a pilot, just because you do not see him from where you are? You must go into the plane to see the pilot; you cannot deny his existence, standing on the ground below. You have to guess that the plane must have a pilot. So too seeing the Universe, you have to guess the existence of God, not deny Him because you are not able to see him!!!

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...RESPONSE TO SQ - 17 !!!

JAI SRI SAI RAM........

Firstly, thank you so much for your prompt response to my request for SQ-11. These SQ's are indeed very beautiful and inspiring......very awakening also. This SQ-17, such an emotional, heartfelt, loving letter from "our loving soul"....how can one ignore this patient plea from our only loving, everso lasting friend?

I have come across people who have said that they are too busy and have no time to pray....not even a fraction of a second to say either "HELLO or THANK YOU" TO THIS LOVING SOUL? But while running along the way, they can spare a chat with a friend. Is this what we call selfishness?

My Humble Prayer To BABA SWAMI.....PLEASE FORGIVE THEM AND GIVE THEM MORE GRACE TIME TO REALIZE AND WAKE UP....AND NOT ONLY WAKE UP FROM A NIGHT SLEEP BUT IN REALITY...

JAI SRI SAI RAM

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT - 17: YOUR LOVING SOUL !

SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT – 17

YOUR LOVING SOUL!!!

My Dearest Friend,

As you got up this morning, I watched you, and hoped you would talk to me, even if it was just a few words; listen to me, asking my opinion or thanking me for something good that happened in your life yesterday. But I noticed you were too busy, trying to find the right outfit to wear.

When you ran around the house getting ready, I knew there would be a few minutes for you to stop and say hello, but you were too busy reading junk news in the newspapers!

At one point you had to wait 15 minutes with nothing to do except sit in a chair. Then I saw you spring to your feet. I thought you wanted to talk to me but you ran to the phone and called a friend to get the latest gossip instead.

Then you gobbled up some breakfast in a tearing hurry & ran down the staircase to get into your vehicle! But you ignored me then also even though I was waiting for you to acknowledge my presence & talk to me a few kind words.

I noticed that before lunch you looked around, maybe you felt embarrassed to talk to me and offer the food to me first & maybe that is why you didn't bow your head. You glanced at 3 or 4 tables and you noticed a pretty 11 year old sweet looking girl talking to me briefly before eating, but you didn't. That's okay. There is still more time left, I told myself.

But I'm very happy that the children are able to recognize the GOD in them more than the adults. The irony is that the ignorant adults are always telling the children what to do & what not to do!

I watched patiently all day long. With all your activities I guess you were too busy to say anything to me.

You went home and it seemed you had lots of things to do. After a few of them were done, you turned on the TV. I don't know if you like TV or not since you watch just about any channel and you spend a lot of time each day in front of it not thinking about anything, just enjoying the show. I waited patiently again as you watched the TV and ate your meal, but again you didn't talk to me.

Your Science has already proved that constant watching of these mindless TV programs actually leads to Dementia among other disorders! If you don't believe in me, at least believe in 'your Science'.

At bedtime, I guess you felt too tired. After you said goodnight to your family you plopped into bed and fell asleep in no time. Then also you didn't thank me! That's okay because you may not realize that I am always there for you. I've got patience, more than you will ever know. I even want to teach you how to be patient with others as well.

I love you so much that I wait everyday for a nod, prayer or thought, or a thankful part of your heart. It is hard to have a one-sided conversation!

You're indeed a great artist. But this delusion, also called Maya, misleads and fools you. You paint a picture and people praise it. You immediately begin to think that you, the body, have actually done it. No! It is I who put the idea for the picture, it is I who guided your hand, and it is I who allowed you to make that picture beautiful. And yet you think that it is you, the body, which did it! Tell me, who is responsible for this delusion, you or me? Still you wouldn't thank me or even talk to me or listen to me.

Well, at times you don't read my letters at all & even delete my mails without giving a single glance!!! I know everything that you do.

Well, you are getting up again. Once again I will wait, with nothing but love for you. Hoping that today you will give me some time. I assure you that the relationship that you would have with me would be the finest in the UNIVERSE!

Have a nice day. Thank you & regards.

YOUR LOVING SOUL!!!

A COUPLE OF RESPONSES FROM READERS…

1.       Good Morning Sir, No one can explain the term "detachment" with such an excellent illustration. (JUST LET GO)

As you said, the sorrow comes to human beings only if they start possessing things... Really a Good One Sir....

I could recollect those "Golden Days" in my school (Sri.Ramakrishna Mission) where there is a separate period for "Moral Education and Prayer" every "Thursday" One Hour.  In today's material world, I feel babies are born with a Computer and a Mouse.  Some Gap is left in today's education system.

rgds,

GANESAN R

2.       Very beautiful. We need such soothing inspiration. (THE PAINTING COMPETITION!!!
