FROM PUTTAPARTHI...THE HOLY TRINITY!!!

The following question was asked to Sathya Sai Baba by the journalist R.K. Karanjia during an interview in September 1976.

Why had this task to be divided into three separate incarnations of the Shirdi, Sathya and Prema Babas?

They are not separate. I have already mentioned the complete oneness of the three in the final objective of the mission. I will give you an example. Take a kilo of gur (a sweet substance). The whole of it tastes sweet. Next break it into small pieces. Each of them is sweet. Finally break them into small grains. You find the same sweetness in them. So the difference is one of quantity and not quality. It is the same with the Avathars. Their tasks and powers requisite to them differ according to the time, the situation and the environment. But they belong to, and derive from, one and the same dharma swarup or divine body.

Let us take the example of fruit. It begins with the seed which grows into the tree and from it comes the fruit. Work can be compared to the seed, worship to the tree and wisdom to the fruit.

The previous Avathar, Shirdi Baba, laid the base for secular integration and gave mankind the message [that] duty is work. The mission of the present Avathar is to make everybody realize that the same God or divinity resides in everyone. People should respect, love and help each other irrespective of colour or creed. Thus all work can become a way of worship. Finally, Prema Sai, the third Avathar will promote the evangel news that not only does God reside in everybody, but everybody is God. That will be the final wisdom which will enable every man and woman to go to God. The three Avathars carry the triple message of work, worship and wisdom.

PS: The magnet can draw iron towards itself, but it cannot attract pieces of iron covered with dust and rust. The dust and the rust on the pieces of the iron must be washed away in order for the magnet to attract. When the mind is polished and pure, there will be harmony in thought, word and deed. This harmony in thought, word and deed is the best proof for the worth of any human being. - SATHYA SAI

·        I always share my feeling with you only Baba.

Today myself and My Wife sarada are leaving Chennai and reaching Prasantinilayam tomorrow and would like to have your darsan Baba.

And our future will be decided by HIM. There is one saying 'better

Late than never...'

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SHIRDI & PARTHI !!!

" The two bodies are different, but the Divinity is One. The first advent (Shirdi Sai Baba) was for revealing Divinity. The second advent (Sathya Sai Baba) is to awaken the Divinity (in human beings). The next advent (Prema Sai) is for propagating Divinity. The three Sais are Shirdi Sai, Sathya Sai, and Prema Sai."

The reason for relating all this is that today happens to be the birthday of Shirdi Sai Baba (September 28, 1835). Shirdi Baba attained samadhi in 1918. Bodies are transient. These vestures are assumed only for the sake of devotees. Unless the Divine comes with a form, no one can develop faith in the Formless. The Divine in human form is the preparation for comprehending the formless Absolute.

From Bhagawan's Divine Discourse on September 28, 1991.

Om Sai Ram

PS: Poison bearing insects will be at home only in dark, dirty places. No snake or scorpion or any other poisonous insect will enter a room that is kept scrupulously clean. So too, the sacred wisdom cannot enter hearts which are dark and dirty. Instead, poisonous breeds like anger will find these hearts as congenial resorts. The sublime significance of Vidya or Higher Learning can be grasped by one, when the mind is pure. It can be communicated to one only when the pure mind sheds its revealing light.

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...LINGOTHBHAVAM

I had been told that every year, one or more Shivalingams have materialised in Baba's body at this sacred period of Shivaratri. He ejects the lingams through His mouth for all to observe. They are always hard, being made of crystal clear or coloured stone and sometimes of metals like gold or silver.

At six o'clock Sai Baba, accompanied by a small group of disciples, came onto the Shanti Vedika and soon after that the speeches began. It was about eight-thirty, powerful electric lights illuminating the group on the platform, when Sai Baba rose to His feet. First He sang a sacred song in His sweet celestial voice that touches the heart. Then He began His discourse speaking, as He always does on such public occasions, in the Telugu tongue.

On the platform Mr. Kasturi was busy making notes of the address which would be published later in both Telugu and English. Sai Baba's eloquence had been flowing in a steady stream for some half-hour when suddenly His voice broke. He tried again but only a husky squeak came. Bhajan leaders among the devotees, knowing what was happening, immediately gave voice to a well-known bhajan and then the great crowd joined in.

Baba sat down and drank from a flask of water. Several times He tried to sing, but it was impossible. Now He began to show signs of real pain. He twisted and turned, placed His hand on His chest, buried His head in His hands, plucked at His hair. Then He sipped some more water and tried to smile reassuringly at the crowd.

Some men around me were weeping unashamedly and I myself felt a flow of tenderness towards the being suffering there before us. I could not grasp the full significance of the event that caused the agony, nor perhaps could most of the great crowd watching, but to understand a thing with the mind is one matter and to feel its meaning in the bones and blood is another. Inwardly I felt that I was sitting at the very heart of something profoundly significant to mankind.

So, instead of blurring my eyes with the tears of sympathy, I kept them fixed on Baba's mouth; my whole attention was glued to that point so that I would not miss the exit of the lingam.

After about twenty minutes, I was rewarded. I saw a flash of green light shoot from His mouth and with it an object, which He caught in His hands cupped below. Immediately, He held the object high between His thumb and forefinger so that all could see it.

A breath of profound joy passed through the crowd. It was a beautiful green lingam, and certainly much bigger than any ordinary man could bring up through his throat. Sai Baba placed it on the top of a large torch so that the light shone through its glowing emerald-like translucency. Then, leaving it there, He retired from the scene.

Mr. Kasturi, who had been present on the platform of the Shanti Vedika when it was produced, described it thus later, in print: "An emerald lingam, three inches high and fixed on a pedestal five inches broad that had formed itself in Him (Baba), emerged from his mouth to the unspeakable joy and relief of the huge gathering."

You should have the firm faith that you are the Messenger of God. Propagate Swamis message to the entire world. Some people may like it and some may not. Do not bother about what others say, be it "yes" or "no." 'No' and 'yes' relate only to you, but for Sai everything is yes, yes, yes. There are no defects in God. All words and deeds of God are perfect. You see the reflection, reaction and resound of your feelings. They are psychological in nature. God always gives good alone. Understand and experience this truth. SATHYA SAI

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...IMPLICIT FAITH !!!

" Once Krishna and Arjuna were going together along the open road. Seeing a bird in the sky, Krishna asked Arjuna, "Is that a dove?" He replied, "Yes, it is a dove." He asked Arjuna, "Is it an eagle?" Arjuna replied promptly, "Yes, it is an eagle." "No, Arjuna, it looks like a crow to Me. Is it not a crow?" asked Krishna. Arjuna replied, "I am sorry, it is a crow beyond doubt." Krishna laughed and chided him for his agreeing to whatever suggestion was given. But Arjuna said, "For me, your words are far more weighty than the evidence of my eyes; you can make it a crow, a dove or an eagle and when you say it is a crow, it must be one.

" Implicit faith is the secret of spiritual success ".

- From Swami's Divine Discourse on Vijayadhashami in Prashanthi Nilayam, 1953.

Om Sai Ram

Keep the faith in the Lord undiminished; you can then safely move about in the world. No harm can come to you! Be like the village women with pots over their heads, one over the other, keeping balance even while talking and walking along the winding lane. They do not forget or ignore the burden or the goal. They are vigilant, conscious of the hardships on the way, the stones and the pits; it is the inner concentration that pays dividends.

-         From Swami's Divine Discourse on 1st Aug 1956.

PS: While struggling in the spiritual field, you must take the Lord Himself as your protector. To instill courage in the child, the mother persuades the child to walk a few steps and turn about, but she will not allow the little one to fall. If the baby totters and is about to lose balance, she hurries from behind and catches the child before he/she falls. God too has His eyes fixed on you, His devotee. He has in His hand, the string of the kite with which He holds you. The string is the bond of Love and Grace. He may give it a pull and sometimes, He may loosen the hold.  Whatever He does, be confident and carefree, for it is He who holds you and gives you the strength. - SATHYA SAI

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...THE COMPLETE CURE !!!

Below is a most wonderful Experience of a Student in Swami's Institute in Brindavan :

One of the students of Swami's College in Brindavan was suffering from severe case of Asthma. He had on numerous occassions written to Swami to cure him of the ailment. When Swami did not seem to reply  he became increasingly frustrated. He tried to ask Baba about his ailment in Darshan lines but some way or the other he could not establish proper contact with Swami.

The following night he had a severe attack of asthma , he couldn't sleep, he couldn't breathe due to severe choking. He looked at Baba's photograph and asked him, "Do you see how I am suffering? Do you even know how I am feeling now? No, You don't. Because if you would have, You wouldn't remain a silent spectator to my suffering. I will show you how it feels."

So saying He, with great difficulty moved himself towards Baba's photograph and closed Baba's nose and mouth and said,  "Do you now understand how it feels " with a sense of anger to Swami. A few moments later he felt a little dizzy fell unconscious.

His roommates woke him up the next morning asking , "Why did you leave your bed and sleep here near Swami's photograph? " The boy got up looking at Swami's photo but did not open his mouth expecting a thorough reprimand from his room mates in case he revealed what he had done during his asthma attack.

The Same day During evening Darshan, Swami having gone through the seating of devotees, came towards students, went straight to the boy and held his hand. In a moment the Boy understood what Swami was doing and he cried out "Swami, I wanted you to cure me, not take my disease on you? Please don't suffer for my sake."

So saying, he tried to free himself of Swami's grip. He suddenly found out that Swami's grip was like an iron rod but Swami's hand was very soft, Swami was looking at him and saying "ONCE YOU ARE IN SWAMI'S HOLD, CAN ANY POWER IN THE WORLD FREE YOU FROM THAT GRIP?

Swami held on for 2 minutes and then started breathing normally. Swami looked at the boy deeply and said -- "Do you think I need your letters to know what's happening with you? I knew about your asthma. Your karmic effect got transferred to me. 20 years of suffering for you is only 2 minutes of suffering for me."

Swami then turned to all the students and said wonderfully "

"Have Total Faith in Me. Give up everything to me. DO MY BIDDING. THE WHOLE WORLD IS WAITING FOR YOU. BE GOOD INSTRUMENTS OF CHANGE IN SOCIETY. I BLESS YOU ALL."

Om Sai Ram

PS: Twenty hammer-strokes might not succeed in breaking a stone, the 21st stroke might break it. But does that mean that the 20 blows were of no avail? No, each of those 20 strokes contributed its share to the final success. The final result was the cumulative effect of all the 21. Infuse every moment of your life with Love for God. Then, evil tendencies will not hamper your path. The object of all spiritual practices is the destruction of the mind and some day, one good deed will succeed in destroying it. This triumph is the result of all the good deeds done in the past. So never give up, and no good deed will be a waste! - SATHYA SAI

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...9 LINGAMS IN 1960!!!

1960

The Mahasivarathri at Prasanthi Nilayam was this year attended by a much larger crowd of devotees than usual. At 8 A.M. that day, Baba hoisted the Prasanthi Flag on top of the Mandir, and blessed the vast assemblage. Explaining the meaning of the symbol on the flag, He exhorted all to overcome the three great enemies of spiritual progress namely, desire, anger and jealousy.

At noon Mahabhishekam was performed and during the proceedings, Baba materialised a twin Lingam. In the evening, a Special Function was arranged by the readers of Sanathana Sarathi, to celebrate the completion of two years of its publication. Baba graced the occasion with His Presence. An address of Gratitude was presented to Him and poems were recited in Tamil, Telugu, English and Kannada, by T.A.Ramanatha Reddy, S.V.Rama Sarma, B.V.Raman, and N.Kasturi respectively.

The evening Bhajan began at 7 P.M. Baba, seated on a special dais gave Darshan to all. After Veda chant, Brahmasris Bairagi Sastry of Eluru and Lakshminarayana Sastry of Salem spoke on the significance of the day and of Lingathathwam [Principle of the Lingam].

Even while the speeches were on, signs of the emergence of the Lingams were evident in Baba, but nevertheless, He started His Discourse at 8.40 P.M. Meanwhile, the Lingams within Him were pressing for Manifestation. Baba interrupted His Discourse and asked that Bhajan be resumed – this happened at 9.20 P.M.

The Prayer Hall resounded to the voices of the thousands gathered therein reciting, Om Sivaya, Om Sivaya, and exactly at 9.32 P.M. NINE Lingams fell from His Mouth on to His Palm. Baba then led the Bhajan.

The Bhajan was continued throughout the night and the Hall was packed to the capacity even in the small hours of the night. Mahamangalarathi was performed at 7A.M.

On the evening of the 26th February, Baba gave Darshan at the Prayer Hall, reclining in a Jhoola [Swing] specially decorated for the occasion. Sri Dupati Thirumalchar spoke on the Real and the unreal while Sri Bairagi Sastry gave a talk on Sai Philosophy. Following this, Baba blessed the audience with a thrilling Discourse.

PS: Every night is marked by darkness. But tonight it is Shivarathri (the holy night of Lord Shiva). What is the difference between rathri (night) and Shivarathri? For the man who has recognized his divinity, every night is Shivaraathri. For the man immersed in worldly concerns, all nights are the same. That night is marked by darkness. This night is marked by light. Spirituality is the lighthouse that spreads light for the man who is full of despair, immersed in insatiable desires. The name of God is the lighthouse. By chanting the name, the bearer of the name can be realized. To recognize the omnipresence of the Divine is the purpose of observing Shivaraathri. This purpose is not served by fasting and keeping awake through the night. These are mere auxiliaries to what is considered the ultimate goal. But God-realization should not be put off to some distant future. It has to be taken up here and now. That is the purpose of Shivaraathri. SATHYA SAI BABA

FROM PUTTAPARTHI...SAVITRI !!!

SAVITRI

The inner meaning of the story of Sathyavan Savitri is that God protects those who lead a life of chastity following the path of truth. The story runs thus: The childless king of Madra, Ashwapati, lives ascetically for many years and offers oblations to Sun God Savitr. He wishes to have a son for his lineage. Finally, pleased by the prayers, God Savitr appears to him and grants him a boon: he will soon have a daughter. She is born and named Savitri in honour of the god.

Once Savitri reaches the marriageable age, she chooses as her husband Sathyavan, the son of blind king Dymatsena, who after he had lost everything including his kingdom lives in exile as a forest-dweller.

Sage Narada advises her father that Savitri had made a wrong choice of marrying Sathyavan as he was destined to die in a year. In response to her father's pleas to choose a more suitable husband, Savitri refuses by saying that she will choose her husband only once.

Three days before the foreseen death of Sathyavan, Savitri wears the clothing of a hermit and takes a rigid vow of fasting and vigil. Her father-in-law tells her she has taken too harsh a regimen, but Savitri replies that she has taken an oath to perform these austerities, at which Dyumatsena offers his support.

The morning of Sathyavan's death, Savitri taking the permission of her father-in-law accompanies her husband to the forest. While splitting wood, Sathyavan becomes weak and swoons to death. Lord Yama comes to claim the soul of Sathyavan. Savitri follows Yama as he carries the soul away. When he tries to convince her to turn back, she discourses on Dharma to Yama, praises Yama for his just rule and offers successive formulas of wisdom. Impressed by her speeches, Yama accedes to offer her any boon except the life of Sathyavan. She first asks for restoration of kingdom and eyesight for her father-in-law. Yama instantly grants the boon. Secondly, she asks for a son for her and Sathyavan. Yama agrees to grant even that boon. It is then that Savitri seizes the opportunity and tells Yama that it is you who have praised me as Pativrata (one of chastity). Now what am I to do? Unable to wriggle out of the tricky situation, Yama agrees to give back the life of Sathyavan.

Sathyavan awakens as though he has been in a deep sleep and returns to his parents along with his wife. Meanwhile Dyumatsena regains his eyesight. Since does not know of the happenings, Savitri narrates everything to her husband and parents-in-law. Joyfully the king and his entourage return to his kingdom. At this happy turn of events, the drama too concluded.

Bhagawan materialised a gold chain for the lead actor Savitri and also blessed the cast with a photograph session. Bhagawan also gave clothes to all the participants with His own hands.

PS: If you try to bring back to your memory at bedtime, the events of the day, everything that happened, you will recall only those events, which are meaningful, those that are deeply embedded within you. The rest of the insignificant events turn hazy, recede and disappear from memory. Be comforted with the firm faith that the suffering and travails of this world are illusory and transitory. Fix your mind firmly on this great fact and set out bravely on the path of Sadhana (spiritual practice), on a continuous journey of devotion to the Lord.

Clay alone is real. How can a pot exist without clay? How can an effect exist separate from its cause? To the wise, it is the Divine Self that permeates everything and everyone. When such wisdom dawns, the darks shadows of the three types of Karma namely: Agama Karma (the consequences of our actions which are yet to come), Prarabdha Karma (the consequences of our current actions) and Sanchitha Karma (consequences of cumulative actions from the past) will flee away from you, making you pure and free! For, the will of God has no limits or exceptions. Resolve through your spiritual practices that you must win the Grace of the Lord. Do not be discouraged on any score. - SATHYA SAI BABA
