SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT – 37

THE ULTIMATE TRUTH!!!

This lion cub, which had lost its mother, and was reared by a sheep, would take itself to be a sheep and was very timid, subdued and fearful. It would move about with the sheep, eat grass, etc.

One day a full grown lion chanced upon them and all the sheep along with the cub tried to flee. The lion was perplexed to see the cub flee from him. So he caught hold of the cub and asked him as to why he was behaving thus. The cub full of fear and trembling, said 'Please don't eat me up.'

The lion out of pity took him to a pond and made him look at his reflection, and said 'You are a lion. You are one of us. See! You look just like me. Now stop this nonsense and roar like me!'

The cub, still trembling, tried to roar, but could only bleat. After several tries, he roared successfully. He was surprised and happy. He was freed from all fear! He now moved among the lions happily as one of them.

The spiritual analogy is obvious - the Lion symbolizes the 'Atma', while the sheep symbolizes body-consciousness, the latter keeping us far away from awareness of our true nature!!!

Another example: Let us say there is a tree and there is also sunlight. The tree would naturally cast a shadow; as a result, we then have both the tree as well as the shadow. The tree is the totality while the shadow, being a projection of the tree on a two-dimensional plane, has features related to the tree.

Thus it is that in the shadow we see bits and pieces of the trunk, the branches, the leaves, and so on. Of course, all the details in the original tree are not seen in the shadow. Similarly, when God created the Universe by projecting Himself, all aspects of His Divinity are not fully evident in this projection. That's why we humans have difficulty in accepting & realizing that we're from God!!! Since all the aspects of God are not clearly visible in us (Except in the case of POORNA AVATARS) we don't realize that we're ourselves God!!!

Surely we would agree that just because the shadow is there, the tree does not vanish or cease to be. This is a very important point, and it is to stress this that Krishna essentially tells Arjuna,

"I am God! I am God! I am not different from God! You're also God! The only difference between you & me is that while you don't realize that you're also God, I'm fully aware that I AM GOD. I AM THAT!!!"

Krishna further explains that the Universe is a projection of the Formless God on space-time. Further, all the diversity we see is a trick of the Divine Shadow Play; that is, on the stage called space-time, The One appears as many!

PS: "The purpose of life is to find unity with God, to realize Divinity within; to find unity with God means to know that you are God. That's all. So long as we feel that we are different from God, there is a long way to go. We will have to travel along the spiritual path until that identity, that oneness, that unity is realized and experienced."

We need to strive to elevate ourselves and work to attain the highest goal, God Himself.

IMPLICT OBEDIENCE!!!

A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room was filled with light, and the Lord told the man that he had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might every day!

The man did so, day after day. For several days he toiled from dawn to dusk, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all his might. Each night the man returned to his cabin sore and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain as the rock simply didn't budge even an inch!!! But he persisted.

Since the man was showing slight discouragement, the 'Satan' decided to enter the picture by placing thoughts into his weary tired mind. "You have been pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn't moved. You've been fooled by God! The task is impossible and you're a failure."

These thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man. Satan continued, "Why kill yourself over this? Just give minimum effort, and that will be good enough. Then come & enjoy life with me."

That's what the man planned to do as the 'monkey mind' played mischief & he was completely influenced by the Satan, but decided to take his troubled thoughts to the Lord. "Lord," he said, "I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock even by half a millimeter. What is wrong? Why am I failing? Why have you asked me to do this?"

The Lord responded compassionately, "My dear fellow, I told you that your task was just to push against the rock with all your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it! Your task was just to push. That's all & that you've done successfully!!!"

"And now you come to me with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewy and brown; your legs have become massive and hard. Your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. Your task was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in my wisdom. This you have done. Now I, my child, will move the rock." Announced God triumphantly!!!

The Man simply bowed in reverence & humility!

PS: We should not waver - having devotion today, tomorrow seeking sensual gratification, and then the day after, back to devotion again. When something goes wrong, we are filled with despair. When discipline is enforced, we start holding back, and when love is showered, we are first again. This dual attitude must be given up. – SATHYA SAI BABA

I daily get SQ forwarded by my friend. SQ series is interesting... I thought I could share something I heard in a sathsang...

Endiram or Yendiram (a machine which grinds grains, can be seen in villages).Many people might not have seen this. It has two units; the bottom unit has a pole at the center on which the top unit will be mounted.

Grains are put in thru the hole at the top unit. The center pole can be called as "acchu" in tamil and the top unit is rotated to grind what ever grain fed in. Always at the end of the grinding process if the top unit is removed, some full grains will be sticking to the pole or the aachu undisturbed, which can be compared as

Acchu/Pole – Achyuthan

Grains – Humans

If humans stick to Achyutha they will not be put under any trouble or miseries and will be safe.

PROPERTIES OR PROPER TIES!!!

Swami Ramanand Tirth had a wife and son [before he became a renunciate]. After he became a renunciate, his wife once came to see him. The Swamiji turned his face and said that he was a renunciate and that therefore the lady should not come to see him.

Hearing this, the lady replied that she had not come there to see her husband but a holy sanyasi. Ramanand Tirth was humbled by the reply and felt regret that he has spoken proudly to the woman.

The Swami then realized that one does not have to give up PROPERTIES. Instead, what is important is to develop PROPER TIES with God! People think that giving up means that one must renounce life. What one must give up is attachment - this is the true meaning of renunciation. Swami Ramanand Tirth learnt this truth that day.

The mind is the culprit & the reason for such a feeling of pride earlier. Happiness can be attained & pride can be annihilated only if the mind is turned towards God. If the mind is turned towards the world, then life would become painful.

For example, if it rains and we want to catch the rainwater, we must place a vessel in the rain with the mouth of the vessel facing the sky. Only then will the rainwater collect in the vessel. If on the other hand we place the vessel upside down, how can we expect rainwater to collect in the vessel?

Our mind is the vessel and God is the sky. Once we turn the mind towards God; then the water of Grace can surely be collected.

Another example: A knife is used by a surgeon and a knife is also used by a killer. The surgeon's cutting of a person is for his good, but the killer uses the knife for an evil purpose. A butcher may use knife to cut meat and a lady may use a knife to cut fruit for a salad. If all the knives are put in a circle with a magnet at the centre, all the knives will be equally attracted by the magnet. The good or bad is not in the knives.

Similarly God is the magnet and all of us are attracted to God. Good and bad are not in a human being, but in the way the mind is used!!! Mind is a monkey and has to be tamed!!!

This story is really good. (SQ – 34) In Srimad Bhagavatham, Ajamila's story is narrated by Sri Sukar to make us understand that even if we chant the Lord's Name unknowingly / without any intention, He is there to save us just as Ajamila was saved from the Yama Dhootas. This story is to prove that if we want to do something out of our own efforts instead of depending on the Lord's grace, it is sure to backtrack.

As you have rightly said, a person will be able to remember the Lord at the time of death only if he practices chanting the Lord's various Names on a daily basis as ordained in our scriptures.

WHEN DEATH STRIKES!!!

A prosperous shopkeeper who had a chain of shops was inspired by the story of AJAMILA, (SQ – 30) wanted to outwit God & take a short cut! He named all his sons after Gods! His plan was to call their names when the moment comes!!! When he became quite old, he realized that his end had come & so he started calling all his sons' names (Calling God by proxy!) one by one 2 or 3 times hoping he would breathe his last right at that moment. But death didn't come then.

All his sons were standing before him leaving their shops waiting for some last minute instruction from their father. The father saw all the sons standing there & suddenly exclaimed, "Alas! You've all left your shops & come. Who would be looking after the shops? Who would collect the money? Some body might come & steal!" Right then he breathed his last!!!

The shops & the money were in his mind throughout his life & he couldn't switch over to God at short notice even though he named all his sons after Gods! It's no mean achievement to think of God at the last moment & have his name on ones' tongue if we haven't practiced it enough!

There are a surge of emotions & thoughts that would invade us at the last moment. Mind is like a monkey & it would play tricks. Hence it requires years & years of practice!

God of death doesn't give notice & he's not a photographer who says, "I'm going to click. Are you ready?"

We've no choice in the matter. We can't get it sooner if we welcome it nor can we avoid it or run away from it! From the time we're born, our march to the cremation ground has started.

Spirituality lies in destroying our animal tendencies & rising to the level of divinity! This is a skill & hence needs constant practice so that it gets honed to perfection!!!

Day before yesterday's CHAPPATHI and today's CARROT were really good stuff.

They reminded me a "scene" in Mahabharat. King Karnan after his death goes to heaven out of his good deeds. He felt terrible hunger. He could not quench his thirst / hunger even after eating many fruits / rice / vegetables and all.

On the way, Lord Naradha appeared before Karnan and advised Karnan to put Karnan's Index Finger in his mouth. What a surprise!!!! Karnan became alright and he did not feel hungry and thirsty. He asked Lord Naradha about this secret.

Lord Naradha told him that Karnan did all Dhaanams and Dharmams except "Anna Dhanam". However, once when Karnan was on the way to forest for hunting, a poor brahmin came across and asked Karnan about the place where "Anna Dhanam" is provided. Karnan showed the way to that poor Brahmin with his Index Finger.

If the Index finger itself has got that power, imagine the power that whole Body, Atma gets... thanks

THE CARROT!!!

One of the most excellent stories told at the Chicago Parliament of Religions was given by a Russian.

A woman, who was a thief, a cheat, and of generally evil repute, was lying on her death bed, and was now frightened at the prospect of what awaited her after her death.

Though she had had, during a long life of evil doing, no thought of religion or of God, yet now she began to cry loudly and more vociferously to God to have mercy on her. So much did she cry that at last she attracted the attention of the angel Gabriel, who came to see what the matter might be?

"Oh Sir," said the woman, "what am I to do?"

"What is the matter?" asked the angel.

"Sir, all my life I have done not one good thing, and now, I am about to die. What will become of me?"

"Is there not one good act of which you can remember? Think," replied the angel.

After much thought the woman remembered that when she was a young woman one day she was almost starving, and then she found a carrot, which was the only food she had got for two days. As she was about to eat it, another woman, as badly off as her, came to her, begging.

Though it was contrary to her usual nature, the carrot was divided between them. This incident the dying woman apologetically related to the angel, who replied: "Hold on to that carrot and it will save you."

The woman held on to the carrot when she died. And as she was being drawn up to heaven by the carrot, many others, who had died after leading a life as evil as her own began to cling to her, in the hope of sharing her escape.

At that, she got jealous and cried out: "Get off; the carrot is mine." No sooner after she had said this the carrot broke, and she fell back into the place of torment.

One small deed of 'unselfishness' had been sufficient to outweigh her bad Karma, but her selfishness had undone, in a moment, the previous good!!!

PS: Life is like a train journey. Whichever stage we are in our life, we must learn to make our journey comfortable and happy. No point in carrying heavy unwanted luggage with us; that will make our journey miserable. Selfishness, Anger, hatred, envy, jealousy - these are the heavy luggage we should avoid. Only then our journey would be a pleasure. – SATHYA SAI BABA

THE WOLVES!!!

"Well, I called it the case of having two wolves inside me!" The young boy listened with rapt attention as his Grand father went on with his rather interesting story.

"The first wolf is absolutely harmless, and what's even better is that it seeks peace and harmony around it. It sees only the good in people, never the bad. It doesn't take offense even if someone is nasty to it. Instead, it has a good word for anyone and everyone who crosses his path."

"Go on, Grandpa," begged the little boy.

Grandpa continued, "This other wolf is a monster. It is under the dangerous delusion that it is the only perfect thing on the planet and constantly finds fault with everything and everyone around it. It has a shallow ego and gets piqued easily. This wolf is always filled with anger and hate. It doesn't realize that hate and anger will get it nowhere."

"When you hear me talk of the second wolf, don't you think it is utterly foolish? Don't you approve of the first wolf and wish the second one never existed? Do you want to know more?"

The boy replied immediately, "Oh, yes, Grandpa, please tell me more."

"These two wolves inside me scream for attention. Each one struggles to push the other to take centre stage. When wolf #1 is the winner for the day, everyone loves me and thinks I'm an angel! But hell breaks loose when wolf #2 decides to be the bully. Wolf #1 is pushed away and all that the world sees of me is a cruel, angry, unreasonable, difficult person to deal with."

"There is a constant tug of war over my spirit, and sometimes it leaves me rather tired and hopeless!" the grandpa continued.

The boy looked intently into his grandfather's eyes and asked, "Which one wins, Grandpa?"

The grandfather smiled and quietly said, "The one I feed!!!"

The boy was speechless & asked, "The one you feed?"

"Naturally", said the grandfather. "Whichever wolf I feed becomes stronger at that time!"

"You mean to say, if you don't feed the 2^nd wolf, it would die! In which case, why do you feed it at all?" the boy was curious.

"Ah! That's the challenge always and that's the choice I need to make all the time!!!" acknowledged the grandpa. "You see that God has given us enough freedom to make our choice, to do whatever we want but there is also a catch!"

"God also has decreed that with every choice we make, there is a consequence attached to it. That's all. So it's up to us not to feed the 2^nd wolf & up to us to kill it!" the grandpa concluded.

The boy nodded enthusiastically & he had learnt so much that day.

One's anger is one's greatest enemy and one's calmness is one's protection. One's joy is one's heaven and one's sorrow is one's hell. He who is possessed by anger will be hated by people. SQ – 31: The saying is very true Sir, but the boomerang might not come back in this very birth, but it will come back for sure. Though every child is born equally, some are born to poor parents and with a "Silver Spoon". This might very well be the boomerang of the past karmas. Also we note that politicians amass so much wealth robbing the people of their own country and we see that nothing happens to them till their death. Maybe their misdeeds boomerang on them in their next birth……….

SPIRITUAL QUOTIENT – 31

THE BOOMERANG!!!

SCENE - 1

A woman baked 'Chappatis' for the members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra chappati on the window-sill, for whosoever. There would be someone who would invariably take it away.

That someone turned out to be a dirty looking & smelling hunchback who came everyday and took away the chappati. Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way: "The good you do, comes back to you: The evil you do, would also come back to you!"

Everyday, as the woman placed the chappati on the window-sill, she offered a prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune. For many months, she had no news of him. She prayed for his safe return.

This went on, day after day. Everyday, the hunch-back came, picked up the chappati and uttered the words: " The good you do, comes back to you: The evil you do, would also come back to you!" He never thanked her for the chappati!!!

The woman felt very irritated. "Not a word of gratitude," she said to herself. "Everyday this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean? I must teach him a lesson!"

SCENE – 2

Just about a few miles away from this house there was a thin & lean man in tattered & torn garments. He suddenly came from nowhere, was hungry & starved & was begging for some food. He didn't have the strength to even walk properly.

At that time, as if God sent, this hunchback reached that place, took pity on him & shared with him half a chappati that he had taken from the window sill earlier. It was an amazing scene of a beggar helping another one!

This also continued for a few days & the thin man thanked the hunchback profusely & said, "I'm slowly getting back my strength now & so tomorrow I shall go to my house. Your half chappati has given me enough strength that I can attempt to walk!!!"

SCENE - 3

In the meanwhile the lady who was making chappatis was quite exasperated that the hunchback wasn't even thanking her & so decided to do away with him. "I shall get rid of this hunchback since he's so ungrateful" she said. And what did she do? She added poison to the chappati she prepared for him & kept it on the window sill for the hunchback!

As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the chappati and muttered the words: "The good you do, comes back to you: The evil you do, would also come back to you!" The hunchback proceeded on his way, blissfully unaware of the war raging in the mind of the woman due to which she had kept a poisoned chappati!

SCENE - 4

The hunchback as usual met his other 'beggar friend' & told him, "Today you're going to your house, isn't it? So today, I shall give you a full chappati which you can eat on your way when ever you feel hungry. Today your need is greater than mine!" The man took the chappati, thanked him again & started walking slowly.

He was nearing his house when he felt hungry & started eating the 'poisoned' chappati which the hunchback had given! He started feeling weaker but somehow managed to reach the house & knock on the door.

SCENE - 5

It turned out to be the same house where the lady was giving chappatis to the hunchback. As she opened it, she was shocked to find her son standing in the doorway. He had grown thin and lean. His garments were tattered and torn. He was hungry, starved and weak.

As he saw his mother, he feebly muttered, "Mom, it's a miracle I'm here. There was this dirty hunchback who used to give me half a chappati everyday & that used to give me enough strength. There was so much love & magic in the half chappati! Today he was kind enough to give me the whole chappati which I've eaten!"

As the mother heard those words, her face turned pale. She trembled & leaned against the door for support. She remembered the poisoned chappati that she had made that morning. She screamed in agony but no words came out & just then the man, her son for whom she prayed every day as she kept the chappati on the window sill fell in her arms & died! It was too late!!!

The hunchback's words kept on echoing in her head: ""The good you do, comes back to you: The evil you do, would also come back to you!" Just like the 'boomerang'!!! The son had returned safely due to the chappati & died in her arms due to the chappati!!!
